| Description | The reported force and torque from pimpleDyMFoam+AMI appears incorrect when rotation is included. A simple rotor was tested with pimpleDyMFoam+AMI and compared to simpleFoam+MRF. When no rotation is included the two codes are identical and produce an expected positive torque indicating that the rotor wants to turn in the positive z-axis (right hand rule). When some positive rotation is included around the z-axis, the force and torque on the rotor decreases as expected with simpleFoam+MRF and tends towards a free running (zero torque) value. However, with pimpleDyMFoam the force and torque increase. The reverse is true when negative rotation is included around the z-axis. The force and torque on the rotor increase as expected with simpleFoam+MRF but decrease with pimpleDyMFoam+AMI. | ||||
| Steps To Reproduce | Extract attached zip file and unzip rotorAMI.zip and rotorMRF.zip. Run blockMesh and then run either pimpleDyMFoam or simpleFoam respectively. The cases are setup with zero rotation, change the rotation in either constant/dynamicMeshDict or system/fvOptions respectively (take care with units). Results for Fz and Mz are shown in the attached graphs which are extracted from the final timestep/iteration in the postProcessing/rotor/0/forces.dat file | ||||

According to your setup the rotor-wall doesn't rotate, which would explain the torque. For pimpleDyMFoam the rotor needs to be set to "type movingWallVelocity;value (0 0 0);". For simpleFoam it needs to be "type fixedValue;value (0 0 0);". |
